HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

REQUESTING THAT THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE ISSUE A POSTAGE STAMP COMMEMORATING THE HAWAIIAN ALOHA SHIRT.

 

 

WHEREAS, the vintage Hawaiian aloha shirt is a cultural icon of the Hawaii of yesteryear; and

WHEREAS, the colorful patterned silk shirts are reminiscent of a leisurely lifestyle of sunlit surf, moonlit oceans, swaying palm trees, bronzed beach boys, graceful hula girls, gracious transpacific liners, steamer trunks and happy tourists vacationing in low rise hotels; and

WHEREAS, the Hawaiian aloha shirt has endured and grown in popularity across the world, reinventing itself in synthetic fabrics with its patterns emerging in various types of apparel; and

WHEREAS, keiki o ka aina (child of the land) Dale Hope, executive with Kahala/Local Motion and author the The Aloha Shirt – Spirit of the Islands, is leading an initiative to have the Postal Service issue a postage stamp commemorating the traditional aloha shirt; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 21st Legislature, the Senate concurring, that the United States Postal Service is requested to issue a postage stamp commemorating the vintage Hawaiian aloha shirt; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this resolution be transmitted to the Postmaster General of the United States, the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee of the U.S. Postal Service, the congressional delegation of Hawaii, the Governor of the State of Hawaii, the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, the Retail Merchants of Hawaii, and Dale Hope.
