The Judiciary and Hawaiian Affairs (JHA) Committee is conducting an informational briefing on the possibility of collaborating with Clean Slate Initiative (CSI) and Code for America (CFA) to expand record clearance efforts in Hawai'i.
CSI and CFA have worked formally with twelve states and Washington D.C. to advance their goals of bringing record clearance relief to a larger group of folks by requiring expungements to be "state-initiated" rather than petition based as is the status quo in Hawai'i. They have demonstrated that their technical skills can vastly improve the systems used to conduct these important state functions, which allow our residents to receive a second chance and pursue jobs, school and other opportunities that may be otherwise curtailed if they are not able to remove this criminal record.
Presenters Include:
· Phil Higdon, Administrator, Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center, Department of Attorney General
· Dana Nakasato, Information Technology Division Chief, Judiciary
· Michelle Acosta, First Circuit Deputy Chief Court Administrator, Judiciary
· Erik Altieri, Director of Campaigns, Clean Slate Initiative
· Caitlin Dunklee, Campaign Strategist, Clean Slate Initiative
· David Crawford, Senior Program Manager, Clear My Record, Code for America
No public testimony will be accepted.
The livestream and/or cable TV broadcast of this meeting will include closed captioning. If you need an auxiliary aid/service or other accommodation (including oral, written, or ASL interpretive services) or are unable to submit testimony via the website due to a disability, please contact the Legislative Attorney at 808-586-6172. Requests made as early as possible have a greater likelihood of being fulfilled.
If you require special assistance or auxiliary aids and/or services to participate in the House public hearing process (i.e., interpretive services (oral or written) or ASL interpreter), please contact the Committee Clerk at least 24 hours prior to the hearing so arrangements can be made.
For further information, please call the Committee Clerk at (808) 586-6162.
