HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

requesting the department of corrections and rehabilitation to expand its personal and professional development programs to include community service programS.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation offers a variety of programs to help inmates gain educational credentials, life skills, and work experience; and

 

     WHEREAS, inmate work programs help to reduce idleness, teach marketable skills, and reduce correctional costs; and

 

     WHEREAS, the State and counties have landscaping work, road work, construction work, and other tasks that could be performed by inmates; and

 

     WHEREAS, expanding the programs offered at correctional facilities to include community service programs would benefit the correctional facilities, inmates, and the State; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2025, that the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is requested to expand its personal and professional development programs to include community service programs; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the community service programs should require inmates to fix potholes, trim trees, pick up litter, and perform other services for the State or counties; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Director of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
