SENATE RESOLUTION

URGING THE CITY AND COUNTY OF HONOLULU TO COMPENSATE THE RESIDENTS OF ANY COUNCIL DISTRICT THAT IS CHOSEN TO HOST A NEW LANDFILL.

WHEREAS, the City and County of Honolulu has been in pursuit of a new landfill for municipal solid waste, which has angered communities across Oahu, could threaten the island's aquifers, and will cost taxpayers tens or hundreds of millions of dollars to move and construct; and

WHEREAS, communities hosting a new landfill should be compensated for the impacts to those communities from landfill operations and related issues; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2025, that the City and County of Honolulu is urged to provide compensation to those communities hosting a new landfill on Oahu; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, Director of Health, Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, and Director of the Department of Environmental Services of the City and County of Honolulu.
