A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to James Campbell High School.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that Loke Huddy, better known as Aunty Loke, has contributed significantly to the betterment of the Ewa Beach community and the athletics program of James Campbell high school. Aunty Loke's participation in the Campbell high school athletics program dates back to the late 1960s when she began assisting her husband, Trask Huddy, in coaching the track and field, volleyball, and junior varsity girls basketball teams. Aunty Loke was the first head coach of Campbell high school's softball team, established in 1976, and was the first woman to be a head coach at Campbell high school. She served as head coach for Campbell high school softball into the 1990s and continued to assist Campbell high school's athletics program in various capacities after stepping down from that role, including coaching the running back position for Campbell high school's football team.

The legislature further finds that as a testament to her skill and diverse coaching talents, Aunty Loke helped Campbell high school's softball team win three Oahu Interscholastic Association titles and four Oahu Interscholastic Association West Division titles. In honor of her thirty-plus years of service to Campbell high school's athletic program, Aunty Loke was recognized with two Coach of the Year awards, two Oahu Interscholastic Association Outstanding Service awards, and a Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association award. Additionally, as a beloved community member, Aunty Loke was given the honor of being named grand marshal in the Ewa Beach Christmas parade.

Aunty Loke continues to enthusiastically support Campbell high school's athletics program as an avid attendee of games, helping to run the clock, keep score, and officiate at games. In the broader community, Aunty Loke has volunteered with, coached, and officiated for community sports leagues including Bobby Sox, Little League, and Pop Warner Football, and has also assisted the Kaimiloa elementary school athletics program. Beyond athletics, Aunty Loke has served in neighborhood watch programs, helped with community cleanup days, and demonstrated care and compassion by providing nutritious meals to fellow community members during times of need. The legislature recognizes that Aunty Loke's significant contributions have positively impacted the Ewa Beach community. A lasting reminder of her dedication would serve as an inspiration to others.

Accordingly, the purpose of this Act is to honor Aunty Loke Huddy's contributions to the Ewa Beach community and James Campbell high school by renaming the high school's baseball field as the Loke Huddy baseball field.

SECTION 2. Notwithstanding any law or board of education rule or policy to the contrary, beginning with the 2024-2025 school year, the department of education shall rename the baseball field at James Campbell high school. The new name shall be the "Loke Huddy Baseball Field".

SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
