A BILL FOR AN ACT
RELATING TO MAKAHIKI COMMEMORATION DAY.
BE IT
ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. Section 8-19, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended to read as follows:
"[[]§8-19[]]
Makahiki Commemoration Day. [November
20th] One of the kapu Hua days of Mōhalu,
Hua, or Akua of the lunar month of ʻIkuā
of each year shall be known and designated as Makahiki Commemoration Day[.]
to recognize the Makahiki, a season and New Year festival of Hawaiian
tradition celebrating harvest, bounty, and the god Lono. The calendar date on which the State should
commemorate the Makahiki season shall be projected yearly using various
technologies that track celestial phenomena to determine and publicize the
equivalent day of the Gregorian calendar. This day is not and shall not be
construed as a state holiday."
SECTION 2. Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed and stricken. New statutory material is underscored.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
