Representative John Mizuno was born and raised in Honolulu until the age of 6. His family relocated to California where he later graduated from Narbonne High School in Harbor City. After graduation Mizuno made the decision to move back to the beautiful island that he missed and attended University of Hawaii at Manoa where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology and was part of the 1983 Warrior football team. Wanting to further his education and expertise Mizuno obtained a law degree from Willamette University, College of Law in Salem, Oregon. Mizuno has been in public service for over 32 years starting as a Public Hearings Officer from 1992 to 1998 then a Special Investigator from 1998 to 2003 for the Department of Human Services.
Representative Mizuno was first elected in 2006 to serve in the Hawaii State Legislature. He is the first Hawaii lawmaker to ever be recognized as the Legislature of the Year as a Freshman. Mizuno was Vice Speaker of the House from 2013 to 2017 and was re-elected Vice Speaker from 2020 to 2022. As part of his focus on the youth and elderly, Mizuno was previously Co-Chair of the Keiki Caucus, Co-Chair of the Kapuna Caucus, as well as Chair for the Outstanding Advocate Awards for Children & Youth. He has also served as a board member to the Hawaii Children's Trust Fund and the National Committee for Youth Policy.
Today, Representative Mizuno is serving his 9th term representing District 29 which includes Kamehameha Heights, Kalihi Valley, and Lower Kalihi. He is currently Chair of House Human Services Committee, whose scope includes programs relating to financial assistance, medical assistance, vocational rehabilitation, social welfare services, and the general well-being of the state's elderly and youth. Mizuno's goal is to bring the residents of District 29 together to create a community that is safe where families can achieve prosperity and security, and where children can thrive and have opportunities to achieve their dreams. He is also a strong advocate for government efficiency and business. Representative Mizuno's legislative priorities has been and always will be the economy & job creation, quality education from pre-K and beyond, accessible healthcare, infrastructure expansion & improvement, affordable housing, a green sustainable environment, and public safety.
