HOUSE RESOLUTION
COMMENDING AND HONORING CARISSA KAINANI MOORE FOR HER OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SPORT OF SURFING AND STATE OF HAWAI‘I.
WHEREAS, it is a privilege for the House of Representatives to formally recognize those exceptionally talented and courageous individuals whose dedication, leadership, and accomplishments not only make history, but enhance the well-being of the community and serve as an inspiration to others; and
WHEREAS, born and raised in Pālolo Valley, CARISSA KAINANI MOORE fostered a love for the ocean and surfing at just 5 years old when she learned to surf off the beaches of Waikīkī alongside her father, Chris Moore, her coach and mentor; and
WHEREAS, CARISSA KAINANI MOORE's talent and hard work quickly became evident as she began winning multiple junior surf competitions at age 11 and earned 11 National Scholastic Surfing Association amateur titles before she even started her sophomore year of high school; and
WHEREAS, at age 16, CARISSA KAINANI MOORE became the youngest champion of a Triple Crown of Surfing event by winning the 2008 Reef Hawaiian Pro title; and
WHEREAS, upon graduating from Punahou School, CARISSA KAINANI MOORE continued to find unprecedented success in the World Surf League by becoming the youngest person, male or female, to win a World Tour title and first woman to compete in the Triple Crown of Surfing, eventually winning five World Championships and three Triple Crown of Surfing Championships; and
WHEREAS, in
2021, CARISSA KAINANI MOORE made history yet again as
she competed in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and became the first female ever
to win a gold medal in surfing at an Olympic Games, proudly representing Hawai‘i and the United States
of America; this victory highlights the major influence that
Hawai‘i has had on
surfing and fulfills the dream of legendary Olympian and surfer, Duke
Kahanamoku, who advocated for the inclusion of surfing in the Olympics; and
WHEREAS, CARISSA KAINANI MOORE has received numerous recognitions for her exemplary achievements, including being inducted into the Surfers' Hall of Fame in 2014 and twice named Best Female Actions Sports Athlete by ESPN; and
WHEREAS, in addition to being one of the most influential female surfers of all time, CARISSA KAINANI MOORE is also passionate about giving back to the community and founded Moore Aloha, a non-profit charitable foundation with the mission to bring young women together though surfing to encourage and empower them to be strong, confident, and compassionate individuals; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-second Legislature of the State of Hawai‘i, Regular Session of 2023, that this body hereby commends and honors CARISSA KAINANI MOORE for her outstanding contributions to the sport of surfing and State of Hawai‘i and extends to her its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all her future endeavors.
