A G E N D A

Discussions may include how to create new public policies that specifically define and protect the cultural practice while enabling its proper perpetuation and looking at ways the State of Hawai‘i can further solidify its connection to hula and elevate its standing at home and abroad.

On August 21 & 22, 2021the inaugural Kupukalālā Kumu Hula Convention was held with over 150 verified Kumu Hula who came together to discuss and ultimately ratify a document they called, "Huamakahikina Declaration on the Integrity, Stewardship, and Protection of Hula”. The document covers the abuse and ignorance of hula, including intentional and unintentional acts of cultural misappropriation.  It also attempts to address many of the contemporary issues that hula faces today and seeks to be a starting point on how to move hula forward in a culturally grounded way.

The Committees will be pleased to hear from these representatives about this important document and the insights gained throughout the process of its creation. They also look forward to hearing recommendations on how as policy makers and a community more can be done to safeguard this beloved cultural institution from further harm.

The presentation will be followed by a session of Q&As that will include next steps to be taken at the Legislative and Community levels.

No public testimony will be accepted.

The cable TV broadcast and/or live stream of this meeting will include closed captioning. If you require other auxiliary aids or services to participate in the public hearing process (i.e., interpretive services (oral or written) or ASL interpreter), please contact the committee clerk at least 24 hours prior to the hearing so that arrangements can be made.

FOR AMENDED NOTICES:  Measures that have been deleted are stricken through and measures that have been added are underscored.  If a measure is both underscored and stricken through, that measure has been deleted from the agenda.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION, PLEASE CALL THE COMMITTEE CLERK AT (808) 586-7794.
