THIRTY-FIRST LEGISLATURE, 2022

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

RELATING TO CLASSROOM SUPPLIES.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that teachers outside of large urban areas do not have adequate access to large discount retailers of school classroom supplies.  These teachers often incur higher expenses in purchasing essential and additional classroom supplies.

The purpose of this Act is to require the department of education to reimburse the expenditure of personal funds that are reasonably and necessarily incurred, for the purchase of essential and additional classroom supplies, by teachers in counties with a population of less than two-hundred thousand.

SECTION 2.  Chapter 302A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to part III, subpart C, and to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

"§302A-    Reimbursement for essential and additional classroom supplies.  The department shall reimburse all expenditures of personal funds that are reasonably and necessarily incurred, for the purchase of essential and additional classroom supplies, by teachers in counties with a population of less than two-hundred thousand.  The department shall adopt rules to govern reimbursement requests made pursuant to this section."

SECTION 3.  New statutory material is underscored.
