HOUSE RESOLUTION

Encouraging all counties of hawaii to create a special Number plate DESIGN for motor vehicles to commemorate the accomplishments of CARISSA Kainani moore.

WHEREAS, every four years the world's greatest athletes convene at the Olympics for the ultimate trial of strength, endurance, and skill; and

WHEREAS, surfing, known by some as the Sport of Kings, is a time-honored pastime, revered cultural practice, and is, perhaps, Hawaii's most iconic export; and

WHEREAS, surfing debuted as an Olympic sport at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics; and

WHEREAS, in challenging conditions off Tsurigasaki Beach, Carissa Kainani Moore ably represented Hawaii as she surfed her way with power and grace to Olympic gold, becoming the first female gold medalist in Olympic surfing history; and

WHEREAS, Moore was raised in the waters off Waikiki Beach, won eleven surfing national titles as an amateur, joined the professional surfing ranks in 2010, and became the youngest person to win a surfing world title at age eighteen; and

WHEREAS, Hawaii is proud of Moore and her outstanding performances, both on and off the water; and

WHEREAS, Moore has donated time and resources to numerous charitable causes, supporting local surf clubs, speaking out against sexism and body-shaming, and bringing attention to eating disorders; and

WHEREAS, Moore has been named an Adventurer of the Year by National Geographic, a Woman of the Year by Glamour magazine, Top Female Surfer in the SURFER magazine poll, many times over, and was inducted into the Surfers' Hall of Fame; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2022, that all counties of the State of Hawaii are encouraged to coordinate their efforts to create a special number plate design for motor vehicles to commemorate the accomplishments of Carissa Kainani Moore; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that each county is requested to submit a report of its efforts and recommendations, including proposed legislation, to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2023; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Mayors, Directors of Finance, and Chiefs of Police of the City and County of Honolulu, County of Kauai, County of Maui, and County of Hawaii.
