RECOGNIZING MARCH 17 AS St. PATRICK's DAY IN HONOR OF SAINT PATRICK and in RECOGNITION OF THE LONGSTANDING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN IRELAND AND THE UNITED STATES AND THE NOTEWORTHY CONTRIBUTIONS AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF IRISH-AMERICANS TO OUR NATION.
WHEREAS, on March 17, during the annual celebration of the Feast of Saint Patrick, people worldwide commemorate Saint Patrick, a patron saint of Ireland, and take part in this day of celebration; and
WHEREAS, on St. Patrick's Day, all who wear the green live for a day in the spirit of Saints Patrick and Bridget, and the spirit of Saint Colmcille whose fifteen hundredth anniversary was in 2021; and
WHEREAS, although it started as a religious holiday, St. Patrick's Day has become a celebration of Irish culture and history with parades, festivals, the wearing of green attire or shamrocks, Irish traditional music sessions, corned beef and cabbage, green beer, and other activities that honor and celebrate the life of Saint Patrick; and
WHEREAS, nowhere is St. Patrick's Day as observed than in the United States where Irish-Americans and people of diverse ethnicities and cultures join in on this global day of celebration and recognize the contributions that Irish heritage, culture, and customs have had on life in America; and
WHEREAS, on St. Patrick's Day, Americans are also reminded of the longstanding cultural and historic ties between the United States and Ireland, starting with Irish immigration to the United States in the seventeenth century and continuing to current day; and
WHEREAS, St. Patrick's Day is a day of remembrance and recognition of the noteworthy achievements and contributions of Irish-Americans to America's melting pot of people and cultures and a day of appreciation of the longstanding relationship that exists between the United States and Ireland; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2022, that this body recognizes March 17 as St. Patrick's Day in honor of Saint Patrick and in recognition of the longstanding relationship between Ireland and the United States and the noteworthy contributions and achievements of Irish-Americans to our nation; and
