A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to the department of transportation.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. (a) There is established within the highways division of the department of transportation a pilot program to maintain areas beneath:

(1) Opaeula Stream Bridge, commonly referred to as Twin Bridges; and

(2) Pokiwai Bridge in Hauula,

to ensure the long-term safety of all motor vehicles and pedestrians in the State.

(b) The department of transportation may enter into memoranda of understanding with any county agency as necessary to authorize the department of transportation to perform any maintenance activity pursuant to this Act that is within the jurisdiction of a county agency.

(c) The pilot program shall cease to exist on July 1, 2025.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $ or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2022-2023 to clear debris from, and maintain streams located beneath, the following bridges:

(1) Opaeula Stream Bridge, commonly referred to as Twin Bridges; and

(2) Pokiwai Bridge in Hauula,

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of transportation for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2022.
