Please be advised that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued guidelines recommending the avoidance of group meetings larger than 50 people.  Due to concerns for public health, legislative hearings have been temporarily suspended.

Requires the Department of Education to establish and administer an ocean safety and stewardship education program for all fourth grade students.  Effective 7/1/2050.  (SD1)

Requires the Department of Education to implement a service-learning curriculum to develop student character, values, self-esteem, civic responsibility, and knowledge of local community issues and concerns though community service volunteer work.  Effective 7/1/2050.  (SD2)

RELATING TO EDUCATION.

Gives a preference to students who live within the service area of a school or who enrolled in the school the previous school year who apply for participation in a career and technical education program offered by that school.  Establishes enrollment in a career and technical education program as a new exception to the requirement to attend school within the service area in which a student resides.  (SD2)

Requires the Department of Education's existing Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) working group to create a state plan to make completion of the FAFSA or an opt-out waiver a statewide graduation requirement by the 2022-2023 school year.  Effective 7/1/2050.  (SD2)

Establishes in the Department of Education an education research and development revolving fund to support the research and development of innovative curriculum, instructional materials, and related technologies.  Effective 7/1/2050.  (SD2)

Persons wishing to offer comments should submit testimony at least 24 hours prior to the hearing.  Testimony should indicate:

·    Testifier's name with position/title and organization;

·    The Committee(s) to which the comments are directed;

·    The date and time of the hearing; and

·    Measure number. 

 

While every effort will be made to incorporate all testimony received, materials received on the day of the hearing or improperly identified or directed, may be distributed to the Committee after the hearing.

Testimony submitted will be placed on the legislative website.  This public posting of testimony on the website should be considered when including personal information in your testimony.
