Sir:

 

     Your Committee on Water, Land, & Hawaiian Affairs, to which was referred H.B. No. 2209 entitled:

 

"A BILL FOR AN ACT RELATING TO IOLANI PALACE,"

 

begs leave to report as follows:

 

     The purpose of this measure is to appropriate funds to the Department of Land and Natural Resources for the repair, restoration, and maintenance of Iolani Palace.

 

     Your Committee received testimony in support of this measure from the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Historic Hawaii Foundation, Friends of Iolani Palace, Ka Lei Papahi O Kakuhihewa, Hawaiian Civic Club, Ka Lahui Hawaii Political Action Committee, Queen's Court, and seven individuals.

 

     Your Committee finds that the preservation and protection of Iolani Palace is critical to honoring Hawaiian heritage and history.  This measure will ensure the continued existence of an important historical landmark by appropriating funds for the repair, restoration, and maintenance of Iolani Palace.

 

     Your Committee has amended this measure by:

 

     (1)  Changing the amounts of the appropriations to unspecified sums;

 

     (2)  Changing its effective date to July 1, 2050, to encourage further discussion, and

 

     (3)  Making technical, nonsubstantive amendments for the purposes of clarity, consistency, and style.

 

     As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Water, Land, & Hawaiian Affairs that is attached to this report, your Committee is in accord with the intent and purpose of H.B. No. 2209, as amended herein, and recommends that it pass Second Reading in the form attached hereto as H.B. No. 2209, H.D. 1, and be referred to your Committee on Finance.
