HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

HONORING KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS AS THE 2020 HAWAIIAN AFFAIRS CAUCUS OUTSTANDING ORGANIZATION.

 

 

 


WHEREAS, Kamehameha Schools is a private charitable educational trust endowed by the Will of Hawaiian Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop (December 19, 1831 – October 16, 1884), the great-granddaughter and last direct descendant of King Kamehameha I; and

 

WHEREAS, during her lifetime, Princess Bernice Pauahi witnessed the rapid decline of the Hawaiian population and knew that education would be key to the survival of her people that she left 375,569 acres of ancestral land, comprising approximately 9% of the total land area in Hawaii; and

 

WHEREAS, it was also instructed that the rest, residue and remainder of her estate be used to educate the Hawaiian people and a portion of her estate was used "to erect and maintain in the Hawaiian Islands two schools...one for boys and one girls, to be known as, and called the Kamehameha Schools".

 

WHEREAS, Princess Pauahi directed her five trustees to invest her estate at their discretion and use the annual income to operate the schools and after the Princess's death in 1884, her husband Charles Reed Bishop started carrying out her will; and

 

WHEREAS, the original Kamehameha School for Boys was established in 1887 but today, her endowment supports an educational system that serves thousands of Hawaiian learners; and

 

WHEREAS, the mission of Kamehameha Schools is to improve the capability and well-being of Hawaiian through education and to operate an educational system serving over 6,900 students of Hawaiian ancestry at K-12 campuses on Oahu, Maui and Hawaii Island, and at 30 preschool sites statewide; and

 

WHEREAS, annually, Kamehameha Schools reach out into communities to serve over 40,000 additional learners through a range of programs and community collaborations which include community charter schools and literacy enhancement programs for public school children, making Kamehameha Schools the largest private contributor to the public-school system in Hawaii; and 

 

WHEREAS, their educational outreach also includes preschool, kindergarten to 12th grade and post high scholarships which enable Hawaiian learners to attend educational institutions outside of the Kamehameha Schools system; and

 

WHEREAS, Kamehameha Schools is guided by innovative strategic plans that map out the direction of their education and stewardship efforts which includes countless opportunities to broaden and deepen a thriving lahui where learners achieve postsecondary education success, enabling good life and career choices; and

 

WHEREAS, Kamehameha Schools envision that these learners will be leaders who contribute to their communities both locally and globally and being grounded in Christian and Hawaiian values; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2020, that this body hereby honors Kamehameha Schools as the 2020 Hawaiian Affairs Caucus' Outstanding Organization.
