A BILL FOR AN ACT
relating to hawaiian language education.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. Chapter 302A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to part II, subpart B, to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:
"§302A-
Hawaiian language teaching; elementary
schools. (a) Each elementary school shall include the
teaching of Hawaiian language in its curriculum.
(b) The department shall submit a report to the
legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of each regular
session on the status of complying with subsection (a). Reports shall include:
(1) The number of
elementary schools currently teaching Hawaiian language and the number of
students receiving Hawaiian language instruction;
(2) A schedule to
implement the teaching of Hawaiian language at all public elementary schools;
(3) A summary of
the Hawaiian language instruction curriculum provided to students;
(4) The level of Hawaiian
language proficiency students have obtained as a result of the required Hawaiian
language instruction;
(5) Timely
submitted commentary from the office of Hawaiian affairs or the University of
Hawaii at Manoa regarding the curriculum and success of teaching Hawaiian
language at elementary schools, if any;
(6) Requested
funding, if any; and
(7) Recommendations and proposed
legislation, if any."
SECTION 2. New statutory material is underscored.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect upon its approval and shall apply commencing the 2020-2021 public school year.
