The State recently received a grade of D+ for its wastewater infrastructure in a recent review by the American Society of Civil Engineer's Hawaii Section, as reported on March 7, 2019, in the Honolulu Star Advertiser[1].  In addition, a second issue for this briefing will be to review the concerns of the Red Hill Military storage tanks which have been scrutinized due to leaks found in some of the tanks.

The House Committees on Health and Energy & Environmental Protection recognize that it is the responsibility of the various counties to oversee the State's wastewater infrastructure.  It is also the responsibility of the Department of Health to enforce statewide regulations regarding violations related to pollution, clean water, and wastewater management.

The purpose of the Informational Briefing is to address immediate concerns regarding public health as it relates to the environment.

The following have been invited to participate:

The Department of Health

United States Military

Board of Water Supply

Life of the Land

Sierra Club of Hawaii

All counties Environment Services Directors and other organizations representing the health, public safety, and the environment

At the conclusion of the briefing the committees on Health and Energy & Environmental Protection will highlight the short term and long-term solutions to address the health, public safety, and environmental concerns  of wastewater management and the Red Hill storage thanks tanks through a plan of action, followed by a prevention plan to ensure the safety of the public and the environment.

If you require special assistance or auxiliary aids and/or services to participate in the House public hearing process (i.e., sign or foreign language interpreter or wheelchair accessibility), please contact the Committee Clerk at 586-6050 or email your request for an interpreter to HouseInterpreter@Capitol.hawaii.gov at least 24 hours prior to the hearing for arrangements.  Prompt requests submitted help to ensure the availability of qualified individuals and appropriate accommodations.
