SENATE RESOLUTION
REQUESTING EVERY COMMERCIAL OR PUBLIC BUILDING LOCATED ON DEPARTMENT OF HAWAIIAN HOME LANDS TRUST LAND TO DISPLAY A PHOTOGRAPH OF PRINCE JONAH KŪHIŌ KALANIANA‘OLE AND A DESCRIPTION OF HIS ACHIEVEMENTS.
WHEREAS, Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole, known throughout the Hawaiian islands as Prince Kūhiō, focused his life on the welfare and prosperity of his constituency and especially that of his own people, the Native Hawaiians; and
WHEREAS, to prevent the further decline of the Native Hawaiian population, Prince Kūhiō spearheaded the passage of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act to provide housing and communities for the Native Hawaiian people through a government-sponsored homesteading program; and
WHEREAS, in 1921, the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act was enacted and the United States set aside approximately 200,000 acres of land to establish a permanent homeland for Native Hawaiians; and
WHEREAS, Prince Kūhiō's legacy lives on, with 10,000 beneficiary lessees currently living on Hawaiian homestead land and another 40,000 on the waiting list; and
WHEREAS, Prince Kūhiō's efforts, accomplishments, and vision for the Hawaiian people should be commemorated; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, that every office building, school, hospital, shopping center, or other commercial or public building located on Department of Hawaiian Home Lands trust land is requested to display a photograph of Prince Kūhiō and a description of his achievements; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Hawaiian Homes Commission.
