SENATE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
requesting the department of education to provide EACH OF ITS schools with two flagpoles so that the uNited States Flag and Hawaii state flag may be flown at the same height.
WHEREAS, the Hawaii state flag is derived from a flag commissioned in 1816 by King Kamehameha I; and
WHEREAS, the flag's stripes symbolize the State's eight major islands;
WHEREAS, on July 31, 1843, the Kingdom of Hawaii flag was raised to mark the end of British occupation and the restoration of the Kingdom's sovereignty; and
WHEREAS, the state flag remains a symbol of pride and respect for the Hawaiian culture; and
WHEREAS, title 36, chapter 10 of the United States Code permits a state flag to be flown at the same height as the national flag; provided the flags are on two separate poles; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Department of Education is requested to provide each of its schools with two flagpoles so that the United States flag and Hawaii state flag may be flown at the same height; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Education.
