HOUSE RESOLUTION
HONORING
AND CELEBRATING HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB OF HONOLULU'S CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY AND
THE HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB MOVEMENT.
WHEREAS,
the HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB MOVEMENT was the fulfillment of a dream for Prince
Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana'ole, a delegate to the United States Congress,
his concern over the decline in spirit and devastating spike in the mortality
rate of the Native Hawaiian people, and the fear that they would not have the
educational skills to protect their interests; and
WHEREAS,
along with other Hawaiian leaders, Prince Kūhiō recognized that
Native Hawaiians were going through a very difficult period of adjustment
after losing their nation, their lands, their way of life; and
WHEREAS,
in 1918, Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana'ole, and a group of his cohorts
established and organized the Hawaiian
Civic Club, now called the HAWAIIAN
CIVIC CLUB OF HONOLULU and often referred to as the "mother club";
and
WHEREAS,
the HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB was formed with the objectives of providing scholarship
aid for the education of Hawaiian students; preserving and promoting the
Hawaiian heritage, traditions, language and culture; promoting and supporting
organizations interested in improving the conditions of the Hawaiian people and
community at large as well as legislation beneficial to the Hawaiian community;
and of perpetuating the values that dignify all human life, which are the moral
and ethical foundation of our cultural expressions that comprise a unique, rich
and enduring legacy of the ingenuous people of Hawai‘i; and
WHEREAS,
the HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB OF HONOLULU was the first of five councils
and sixty-seven clubs to follow in the HAWAIIAN
CIVIC CLUB MOVEMENT, all working toward the goal of improving life for Native
Hawaiians; and
WHEREAS,
the HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB OF HONOLULU continues to thrive and serve as a leader
within the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs that was created in 1959 to
facilitate the goals and objectives of bettering the conditions of Native
Hawaiians; now, therefore,
BE
IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the
State of Hawai‘i, Regular Session of 2019, that this
body, in the malama of Kaulua and the rising of the Kūlua, hereby honor
and congratulate the HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB OF HONOLULU'S
CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY AND THE HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB MOVEMENT and offers a
warm aloha and best wishes.
