In Hawaii 168,000 residents suffer from chronic kidney disease, with 4,000 requiring dialysis treatments on any given day. With 700 new dialysis patients added each year to the need of treatment, the dialysis centers struggle to keep up with the high medical need as many dialysis centers which are completely built with all the required new medical equipment sit idle awaiting the review and certification process.
The purpose of this Briefing will be to allow the Department of Health to provide their strategic plan to work together with the Legislature on both a short-term solution and a long-term solution to efficiently review and certify dialysis centers in Hawaii. It is important to note that the Administration is working closely with the Legislature to address the review process in an efficient manner. Moreover, the plan and recommendations provided today to the Legislature will result in bills for introduction for the 2018 Legislature.
