Sir:

 

     Your Committee on Education, to which was referred S.C.R. No. 159 entitled:

 

"SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO CONVENE A COMPUTER SCIENCE TASK FORCE TO REVIEW COMPUTER SCIENCE PROGRAMS IN HAWAII'S PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND TO SUPPORT, STRENGTHEN, AND ESTABLISH PARTNERSHIPS AMONG EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS, INDUSTRIES, AND BUSINESSES TO IMPROVE COMPUTER SCIENCE PROGRAMS,"

 

begs leave to report as follows:

 

     The purpose of this measure is to request the Department of Education to:

 

(1)  Convene a Computer Science Task Force (Task Force) to review computer science programs in public schools in the State;

 

(2)  Establish partnerships among educational institutions, industries, and businesses to improve computer science programs; and

 

(3)  On behalf of the Task Force, submit the findings and recommendations of the task force, including any proposed legislation, to the Legislature no later than 20 days prior to the 2019 Regular Session.

 

The Department of Education, Oahu County Committee on Legislative Priorities of the Democratic Party of Hawaii, and an individual testified in support of this measure.  The Office of Information Practices provided comments on this measure.

 

     As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Education that is attached to this report, your Committee concurs with the intent and purpose of S.C.R. No. 159 and recommends that it be referred to your Committee on Finance.
