A BILL FOR AN ACT
relating to international affairs.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the business, cultural, educational, and historical ties between Taiwan and Hawai‘i are numerous and longstanding, including:
(1) A Taipei Economic and Cultural Office is located in Honolulu;
(2) Hawai‘i operates a trade and investment office in Taipei;
(3) Many students from Taiwan study at Hawaii's educational institutions;
(4) There are several investments in Hawai‘i made by Taiwan or Taiwanese organizations such as the Chinese Cultural Plaza in downtown Honolulu; and
(5) Hawai‘i and Taiwan entered into a sister state agreement in 1993.
The purpose of this Act is to appropriate moneys for events recognizing the twenty-fifth anniversary of the sister state relationship between Hawai‘i and Taiwan and the many contributions socially, culturally, and economically that Taiwan has made to Hawai‘i.
SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $75,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2018-2019 for events recognizing the twenty-fifth anniversary of the sister state relationship between Hawai‘i and Taiwan.
The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of business, economic development, and tourism for the purposes of this Act.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2018.
