A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

relating to education.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $100,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2018-2019 for the department of education to establish a workforce development microgrant program to award grants to students who are enrolled in a public high school and are applying for technical or workforce training applicable to the following occupations:

     (1)  Registered nurse;

     (2)  General and operations manager;

     (3)  Accountant or auditor;

     (4)  Elementary school teacher;

     (5)  Secondary school teacher;

     (6)  Civil engineer;

     (7)  Sales manager;

     (8)  Financial manager;

     (9)  Nursing assistant;

    (10)  Teacher assistant;

    (11)  Medical assistant;

    (12)  Automotive service technician or mechanic;

    (13)  Heavy and tractor-trailer truck driver;

    (14)  Bookkeeping, accounting, or auditing clerk;

    (15)  Firefighter;

    (16)  Retail salesperson;

    (17)  Waiter or waitress;

    (18)  Cashier;

    (19)  Food preparation and server; or

    (20)  Maid or housekeeping cleaner;

provided that the funds shall be used to pay for costs associated with the technical or workforce training, including the cost of the technical or workforce training course and books and other course materials; provided further that the department of education shall establish written standards and criteria, including an application process, by which grants shall be awarded.

     The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.


     SECTION 2.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2018.
