HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING GUSTAV H. WEBLING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ON THE OCCASION OF ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY.

 

 

 

     WHEREAS, Gustav H. Webling Elementary School opened its doors on February 26, 1968; the school was named in honor of Gustav H. Webling, a teacher and principal in the Territory of Hawaii's Department of Public Instruction for 36 years and a symbol of the dedication and professionalism of educators; and

 

     WHEREAS, on opening day, the younger children took a bus and the fourth and fifth graders walked from Aiea Elementary School to their new campus, which consisted of two buildings; and

 

     WHEREAS, during the official opening ceremony, Gustav H. Webling's wife, Mrs. Marie Adams Kaleialii Webling, participated in the traditional untying of the maile lei and a portrait of the school's namesake was donated, where it still hangs today; also in 1968, teachers and students planted trees around the campus, some of which are still standing; and

 

     WHEREAS, while much has changed over the past half-century with the community growing by leaps and bounds, the commitment of the school's faculty and staff to educate children remains undiminished by time; the campus currently has three classroom buildings, two portables, a cafeteria, administration building, playcourt, a rock garden near the flag pole, and a fourth grade lo‘i and there are now 50 full-time faculty and staff and over 476 students; and

 

     WHEREAS, this year marks the 50th anniversary of Gustav H. Webling Elementary School and like Gustav H. Webling, Principal Chad Matsuda and his faculty and staff strive to remain true to their mission to provide a challenging, meaningful, safe, standards-based educational environment for their students while also emphasizing academic achievement, leadership skills, character education, and cultural pride; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2018, that this body hereby commends and congratulates Gustav H. Webling Elementary School on the momentous occasion of its 50th anniversary and extends its warmest aloha and best wishes to the principal, faculty, and staff for their continued success in providing a rich and challenging educational environment for their students.
