A BILL FOR AN ACT
relating to VIETNAM war veterans.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The legislature finds that on May 25, 2012, President Barack Obama, by Presidential proclamation, proclaimed May 28, 2012, through November 11, 2025, as the Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War. The President called upon "[f]ederal, [s]tate, and local officials to honor our Vietnam veterans, our fallen, our wounded, those unaccounted for, our former prisoners of war, their families, and all who served[.]" Throughout 2017, various programs, ceremonies, and activities were held on each island in the State of Hawaii to honor and recognize our Vietnam veterans.
The legislature additionally finds that on March 28, 2017, President Donald J. Trump signed the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017, which recognizes March 29 annually as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.
The purpose of this Act is to designate March 29 of each year as "Vietnam War Veterans Day".
SECTION 2. Chapter 8, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:
"§8- Vietnam War Veterans Day. March 29 of each year shall be known and designated as "Vietnam War Veterans Day", provided that this day is not and shall not be construed to be a state holiday."
SECTION 3. New statutory material is underscored.
SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
