A BILL FOR AN ACT
relating to military appreciation month.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. In 1999, Congress designated the month of May as National Military Appreciation Month to ensure that the nation was given an opportunity to publicly demonstrate their appreciation and thanks for the sacrifices made by service members past and present. Since Hawaii has had a long history with the United States military, it seems only fitting that Hawaii recognize and honor those individuals of our armed forces who have played an important role in the development of our country and State.
The purpose of this Act is to designate May as Military Appreciation Month in Hawaii.
SECTION 2. Chapter 8, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:
"§8- Military Appreciation Month. The month of May shall be known and designated as "Military Appreciation Month". The month of May shall celebrate the strong ties Hawaii has to the United States Military and the sacrifices made by service members of the United States Armed Forces past and present. This month is not and shall not be construed as a state holiday."
SECTION 3. New statutory material is underscored.
SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
