The purpose of this informational briefing is to discuss research and recommendations on protecting Hawaii's coral reefs and nearshore ocean resources. Presentations will be on climate change and coral bleaching events by Dr. Kuulei Rodgers from the University of Hawaii and others followed by near shore fishing and coral reef ecological impacts by Dr. Alan Friedlander and his research team from the University of Hawaii. Advocates from the Surfrider Foundation will provide insight on community efforts to address ecological and water quality impacts on our coral reefs and fisheries. Lastly, the Department of Land and Natural Resources and its Division of Aquatic Resources will present information on the departments work to address the various issues and its recommendations to the legislature for solution in the 2018 legislative session.
No public testimony will be accepted.
