The purpose of this informational briefing is for economists and research specialists to discuss and provide information regarding Hawaii's cost of living and real estate. Innovating sustainable program management goals for local businesses to compete on a national and global platform is a key concern as Hawaii continues to address affordable housing and enhance workforce development.

Participants will include:

Paul H. Brewbaker, Ph.D., CBE, is well-adept in Hawaii's economy. After earning a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Hawaii, Brewbaker served as Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at the Bank of Hawaii as well as an academic lecturer at the University of Wisconsin and University of Hawaii. His areas of interest focus on global and tourism economics. Brewbaker is the current owner of TZ Economics, an economics consulting firm.

Carl Bonham, Ph.D., is a Professor of Economics and serves as the Executive Director of the Economic Research Organization at the University of Hawaii (UHERO). His research interests include applied econometrics and forecasting, public finance, Hawaii's economy, and tourism economics. Since co-founding UHERO in 1997, Bohnam has applied his academic pursuits to policy discussions regarding the tourism industry and Hawaii's economy in several publications.

James Mak, Ph.D., currently serves as Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Mak offers in-depth knowledge about the historical development of tourism in Hawaii. Before becoming a Professor at the University of Hawaii, Mak worked as the Tax Review Commission Economist in 1989 and has studied the transient accommodation tax issue extensively. While his research interests focus on the economics of travel and tourism, Mak also focuses on public finance, tourism development, and trans-Pacific trade partnerships.

Eugene Tian, Ph.D., is the Economic Research Administrator for the Research and Economic Analysis Division housed in the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT). Tian's team conducts research on a variety of economic issues ranging from tourism, emerging industries, technology, energy, and taxation. His office also develops surveys to formulate economic forecasts for Hawaii.
