SENATE RESOLUTION

 

 

Requesting the State Historic Preservation division OF the Department of Land and Natural Resources to conduct a survey throughout the state of hawaii and recommend sites for inclusion on the National REGISTER of historic places.

 

 


     WHEREAS, the National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation's historic places worthy of preservation; and

 

     WHEREAS, the National Register of Historic Places categorizes general listings into one of five types of properties:

 

     (1)  District;

 

     (2)  Site;

 

     (3)  Structure;

 

     (4)  Building; and

 

     (5)  Object; and

 

     WHEREAS, listing properties on the National Register of Historic Places encourages the preservation of historic resources by documenting a property's historic significance and by allowing for federal and state tax credits or incentives; and

 

     WHEREAS, the State Historic Preservation Division of the Department of Land and Natural Resources works to preserve and sustain reminders of earlier times which link the past to the present; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2017, that the State Historic Preservation Division of the Department of Land and Natural Resources is requested to conduct a survey throughout the State of Hawaii and recommend sites for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the State Historic Preservation Division is requested to work with the Hawaii Historic Foundation to complete the survey; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the State Historic Preservation Division is requested to make recommendations on:

 

     (1)  Incentives for property owners who maintain properties registered on the National Register of Historic Places;

 

     (2)  Strategies for the State to acquire properties that are identified through the survey; and

 

     (3)  Funding strategies for the State Historic Preservation Division to receive funding and provide funding to property owners to help maintain and preserve the sites; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the State Historic Preservation Division is requested to report its findings and recommendations, including any proposed legislation, to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2018; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources and the Administrator of the State Historic Preservation Division.
