A BILL FOR AN ACT
relating to the STATE sheriff.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. Chapter 353C, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:
"§353C- State sheriff; qualifications. Any person appointed by the director to the position of state sheriff shall, prior to appointment, have a minimum of five years of combined law enforcement experience as one or more of the following:
(1) Sheriff;
(2) Deputy sheriff;
(3) County or municipal police officer;
(4) State law enforcement officer; or
(5) Military police officer;
provided that this section shall not apply to any person appointed to the position of state sheriff before July 1, 2017."
SECTION 2. New statutory material is underscored.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2017.
