HOUSE RESOLUTION
RECOGNIZING Kalani PE‘A – grammy® AWARD WINNing singer,
songwriter, produceR; Author and illustrator; AND EDUCATOR FOR ALL HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS, ACCOLADES, AND EFFORTS TO PERPETUATE THE HAWAIIAN CULTURe.
WHEREAS, it is vital that the Native Hawaiian culture and arts, involving ‘ōlelo, mele, and traditional and cultural practices, be forever perpetuated for future generations of Native Hawaiians; KALANI PE‘A is a torch bearer, and we recognize his accolades, accomplishments, and continued work on behalf of the Native Hawaiian culture; and
WHEREAS, KALANI PE‘A has pursued his passion for music since the age of four, and has gained statewide and national accolades for his work as a performing artist – winning Brown Bags to Stardom at age 18, and the men's classical and musical divisions in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition, Colorado/Wyoming chapter; and
WHEREAS, KALANI PE‘A has perpetuated ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i through the illustration and publication of five children's books, contributed to the design of Nā Maka O Kana, the sole Hawaiian language newspaper of Hawaii, and dedicated his time to working in the community through ‘Aha Pūnana Leo and Lāhainā Civic Club; and
WHEREAS, in 2016, KALANI PE‘A's debut album "E Walea" reached No. 1 on the iTunes world music charts and No. 12 on the Billboard world albums charts, exemplifying his passion for and vision of Hawaiian music for future generations; and
WHEREAS, in 2017, KALANI PE‘A won the Grammy® Award for Best Regional Roots Music Album for "E Walea" and became the first Native Hawaiian recording artist in history to win a Grammy® in this award category; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawai‘i, Regular Session of 2017, that this body hereby honors KALANI PE‘A for his outstanding achievements, applauds his dedication and passion in sharing and perpetuating Hawaiian culture throughout our state, country, and throughout the world, and extends its warmest aloha and sincere best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
