SENATE RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO WORK WITH A SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE TO DEVELOP A PROOF OF CONCEPT FOR THE PLANNING AND DESIGNING OF A GYMNASIUM AT ANUENUE SCHOOL.

 

 


     WHEREAS, the mission of Kula Kaiapuni ‘O Ānuenue is to "empower children by providing them a quality education in both Hawaiian and English based on Hawaiian culture and history to enable them to seek knowledge and excellence and contribute to their community and their lāhui"; and

 

     WHEREAS, Kula Kaiapuni ‘O Ānuenue students participate in State Student Council activities, events, and trainings; and are very active in a variety of athletic events such as football, volleyball, and basketball through the school's membership in the Oahu Interscholastic Association; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Kula Kaiapuni ‘O Ānuenue campus currently lacks a gymnasium for students; and

 

     WHEREAS, there is an opportunity to form a partnership between the Department of Education and a school of architecture to develop a proof of concept for the designing and planning of a gymnasium; and

 

     WHEREAS, a proof of concept is a realization of a certain method or idea to demonstrate its feasibility or a demonstration in principle, whose purpose is to verify that some concept or theory has the potential of being used; and

 

     WHEREAS, there are programs where students pursuing a Doctorate of Architecture routinely engage in studio projects in the public interest; and

 

     WHEREAS, one professional studio course option is the community design studio, which  involves professional research and design on outreach community projects that may include architectural design, technological innovation, historic preservation, urban design, or other topics that consults and benefits a specific community user group; and

 

     WHEREAS, the community design studio course has provided an active and visible connection between the program and the community, fulfilling the role of bridging theory and practice, and of service to society; and

 

     WHEREAS, the opportunity to plan and design a gymnasium at Kula Kaiapuni ‘O Ānuenue would be an appropriate and beneficial project for the students enrolled in the community design studio course; and

 

     WHEREAS, demand frequently exists throughout state agencies for the planning and designing of state projects; and

 

     WHEREAS, the partnership established for the Kula Kaiapuni ‘O Ānuenue gymnasium project could become a model for many future state projects; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2016, that the Department of Education, a school of architecture that houses a community design studio, and Kula Kaiapuni ‘O Ānuenue are requested to enter a partnership to develop a proof of concept plan and design for a gymnasium; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Education, Superintendent of Education, and Principal of Kula Kaiapuni ‘O Ānuenue.
