A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

relating to elections.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 12, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to part I to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§12-    Term limits; office of house of representatives; office of senate.  For terms beginning on the general election of 2020, no person shall be a candidate to serve an additional term of office in the house of representatives if the person is an incumbent member of the house of representatives for twelve consecutive years unless that member serves a hiatus of at least one term of office in the house of representatives.  For terms beginning on the general election of 2020, no person shall be a candidate to serve an additional term of office in the senate if the person is an incumbent member of the senate for twelve consecutive years unless that member serves a hiatus of at least one term of office in the senate."

     SECTION 2.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval and upon ratification of a constitutional amendment requiring term limits for members of the legislature of twelve consecutive years in the house of representatives and twelve consecutive years in the senate.
