HOUSE RESOLUTION
RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING waipahu high school for having the first nationally recognized model academies in the state of hawaii.
WHEREAS, in September, 2015, Dr. Jay Steele, Chief Academic Officer of Metropolitan Nashville Schools, and Connie Majka, Director of Learning and Development of Philadelphia Academies Inc., reviewed Waipahu High School’s Academy of Natural Resources and Academy of Health & Sciences and conducted a two-day onsite review for accreditation; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Steele and Ms. Majka declared that Waipahu's Academy of Natural Resources and Academy of Health & Sciences were high quality academies that met the National Career Academy Coalition’s 10 National Standards of Practice and reflected the development, implementation, and sustainability of high quality college and career-readiness programs; and
WHEREAS, Waipahu High School’s Academies met the needs of the community and employer base while supporting local businesses and workforce development; and
WHEREAS, Waipahu High School’s Academy of Natural Resources and Academy of Health & Sciences were the first nationally recognized Model Academies in the State of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, Waipahu High School’s Academy of Health & Sciences' mission is to create a nurturing environment that encourages high expectations for success through relevant and rigorous interdisciplinary learning experiences as it prepares all students for college and career success; and
WHEREAS, the Academy of Health & Sciences offers prospective students with two innovative and cutting edge nationally accredited Programs of Study, namely Clinical Health and Medical Biotechnology & Research, to meet the needs and demands of an increasingly and ever-changing health industry through career-shadowing and internships through local partnerships; and
WHEREAS, the Medical Biotechnology & Research Program of Study’s unique partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories and Rutgers University’s Waksman Student Scholars Program allows participating students to conduct authentic real-world cutting edge research in molecular biology and have their analysis published alongside researchers at the National Institutes of Health allowing scientists worldwide to view their results; and
WHEREAS, the Clinical Health Program of Study focuses on developing health care professionals through numerous partnerships with important health care entities including the Queen's Medical Center and the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine; through early exposure to industry standards and participation in real world learning experiences, Academy of Health & Sciences students are poised to address the growing needs of an aging society in Hawaii and the nation; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2016, that this body hereby expresses its heartfelt congratulations to Waipahu High School for having the first nationally recognized Model Academies in the State of Hawaii.
