SENATE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
urging the City & County of Honolulu and the State of Hawaii to honor the Veterans of the state of hawaii by committing to the restoration of the Waikiki Natatorium.
WHEREAS, it is estimated that the dedication of the Natatorium honors over 10,000 men and women of Hawaii who served overseas as soldiers, sailors, Red Cross workers, ambulance drivers and missionaries; and
WHEREAS, when the Natatorium opened on August 24, 1927, the first dive into the pool was by Duke Kahanamoku, celebrating his birthday, followed by a World & National Swim Competition that included Johnny Weissmuller and Buster Crabbe, who won their respective races; and
WHEREAS, the Territory of Hawaii purchased property in Waikiki specifically for a Memorial Park to be built upon the site; and
WHEREAS, the 1921 Territorial Legislature unanimously authorized and funded the Olympic Size Salt Water Natatorium in time for a World and National Swimming competition; and
WHEREAS, the Natatorium was placed on the National Historic Register on August 11, 1980 as site # 80001283; and
WHEREAS, third and fourth generation family members continue to attend services at the Natatorium on Memorial Day and Veterans Day to honor their relatives; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, the House of Representatives concurring, that the City & County of Honolulu and the State of Hawaii honor the commitment to the Veterans and implement full restoration of this National Treasure; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the most fitting tribute to those men and women of Hawaii who served overseas is to permanently inscribe the names of the fallen service members on the walls of the Natatorium; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this practice of honoring the fallen service men and women at the Natatorium shall continue apply to future fallen service members; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, the President of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives, all Hawaii State Senators and Representatives, the Mayor of the City & County of Honolulu, the Managing Director of the City & County of Honolulu, all Honolulu City Council members; The Veterans of Foreign Wars; the Navy League of Hawaii; the Marine Corps League of Hawaii and all Oahu Neighborhood Board chairs; and

The restoration of the Waikiki Natatorium
