SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

Designating march 2014 as localicious Hawaii month.

     WHEREAS, the Hawaii Agricultural Foundation will be launching its first annual Localicious Hawaii campaign (Localicious Hawaii) to recognize local restaurants that are committed to buying local while also raising funds to encourage future farmers in Hawaii; and

     WHEREAS, Localicious Hawaii supports the State's "Buy Local, It Matters" campaign to encourage residents to support Hawaii farmers by making conscious decisions to purchase locally grown produce; and

     WHEREAS, Localicious Hawaii asks residents and visitors to support local restaurants that are committed to buying local and serving menu items that feature local farmers and products; and

     WHEREAS, Localicious Hawaii furthers the Hawaii Regional Cuisine movement that brought twelve local chefs together more than twenty years ago to promote Hawaii as a food destination; and

     WHEREAS, Localicious Hawaii promotes an agricultural network so that chefs and restaurants have access to locally grown produce; and

     WHEREAS, more than sixty-five restaurants are participating in the 2014 Localicious Hawaii campaign; and

     WHEREAS, participating restaurants will create a dish incorporating a locally grown, raised, or caught product and donate proceeds to the Hawaii Agricultural Foundation's agriculture education programs; and

     WHEREAS, participating restaurants will be able to adopt a public school fourth grade classroom wanting the Veggie U program; and

     WHEREAS, the goal of Localicious Hawaii is to raise $50,000 for the Hawaii Agricultural Foundation's Veggie U program; and

     WHEREAS, Localicious Hawaii will run during the month of March to coincide with National Agricultural Day, which will be celebrated on March 25, 2014; now, therefore,

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, the House of Representatives concurring, that March 2014 be designated as Localicious Hawaii Month to recognize local restaurants that are committed to buying local while also raising funds to encourage future farmers in Hawaii; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, Chairperson of the Board of Agriculture, and Hawaii Agricultural Foundation.
