A BILL FOR AN ACT
Proposing an amendment to ARTICLE IX OF the hawaii constitution to require FOOD MADE FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION THAT IS PRODUCED WITH genetic engineerING TO BE LABELED AS SUCH.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. Article IX of the Constitution of the State of Hawaii is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:
"LABELING OF FOOD PRODUCED WITH GENETIC ENGINEERING
Section . Any food made for human consumption that is produced with genetic engineering shall be labeled as having been produced with genetic engineering."
SECTION 2. The question to be printed on the ballot shall be as follows:
"Shall the state constitution be amended to require any food product made for human consumption that is produced with genetic engineering to be labeled as having been produced with genetic engineering?"
SECTION 3. New constitutional material is underscored.
SECTION 4. This amendment shall take effect upon compliance with article XVII, section 3, of the Constitution of the State of Hawaii and no earlier than July 1, 2015.
