HOUSE RESOLUTION

urging the department of education to consider the need to protect children from heat and sun exposure, in addition to rainfall, when assessing the need for covered play yards at public schools.

     WHEREAS, sunlight and heat produced from sunlight can be very intense in Hawaii, especially during the middle of the day; and

     WHEREAS, exposure to bright sunlight and heat can cause fatigue, dehydration, and other health issues; and

     WHEREAS, children are commonly restricted to playing in certain locations such as play yards while attending school; and

     WHEREAS, children can be especially susceptible to health risks associated with bright sunlight and heat; and

     WHEREAS, rain can prevent children from playing in uncovered play yards; and

     WHEREAS, there is a need to consider creating more covered play yards at public schools; now, therefore,

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, that the Department of Education is urged to consider the effects of heat and sun exposure, in addition to rain, when assessing the need for covered play yards at public schools; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Education and the Superintendent of Education.
