HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

congratulating Michelle kay as the 2013 milken educator award recipient, bryan rankie as the 2013 milken educator teacher of promise award recipient, laura fukumoto and dave morishige as the recipients of the 2012 presidential award for excellence in math and science teaching, christel collins as the 2013 state librarian of the year, and edwin kamikawa as the 2013 librarian of excellence.

 

 


WHEREAS, the people of the State of Hawaii take pride in recognizing and honoring the superb achievements and notable contributions of educators who, through their extraordinary dedication and personal efforts, significantly improve the quality of education in Hawaii; and

 

WHEREAS, MICHELLE KAY is the 2013 Milken Educator Award recipient, a teacher and a role model who inspires excellence among her students and colleagues; she is a science teacher at Kalakaua Middle School and has been instrumental in promoting interest and participation in science programs such as robotics, aquaponics, and fairs since arriving at Kalakaua Middle School in 2011; many consider MICHELLE KAY a trustworthy and caring educator whose classroom doors stay open to help students whenever possible; and   

 

WHEREAS, BRYAN RANKIE is the 2013 Milken Educator Teacher of Promise Award recipient, an award which is bestowed upon an individual who demonstrates excellence and the highest qualities of a professional educator; he is a teacher at Mauka Lani Elementary School, and has an excellent rapport with students and staff alike; through hard work and dedication his students have closed the achievement gap and met federal progress benchmarks; and

     WHEREAS, LAURA FUKUMOTO is a recipient of the 2012 Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching; she has been a teacher at Aliamanu Elementary School for 40 years and under her guidance, math scores rose dramatically; and

 

     WHEREAS, a recipient of the 2012 Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching, DAVE MORISHIGE has taught for more than 23 years, with seven years at Mililani Mauka Elementary School; DAVE MORISHIGE's hands on lessons help students understand concepts and meet standards; he has partnered with university doctoral candidates to help parents and students gain better understanding of the marine ecosystem and is the founder of his school's lego robotics club and underwater robotics club; and

 

     WHEREAS, CHRISTEL COLLINS of Manoa Public Library is the 2013 State Librarian of the Year; blessed with an engaging, thoughtful, and friendly personality, CHRISTEL COLLINS is a woman with boundless energy who is able to see the big picture, and during her time at the Manoa Public Library, she oversaw the construction of a new modern, environmentally-friendly library facility; and

 

     WHEREAS, EDWIN KAMIKAWA is the 2013 Librarian of Excellence Award recipient; his high-quality graphic designs along with promotional items for all of Hawaii's 50 public libraries serve as a testament to his dedication to the library system; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, that this body hereby commends, congratulates, and honors MICHELLE KAY, BRYAN RANKIE, LAURA FUKUMOTO, DAVE MORISHIGE, CHRISTEL COLLINS, and EDWIN KAMIKAWA for their outstanding accomplishments and much-deserved recognition, and extends to all of them its sincere mahalo and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
