HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

Recognizing the University of Hawaii Community College System for 50 years of educational excellence and for the leadership role it performs in offering educational and employment opportunities for all.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII COMMUNITY COLLEGES provide open-door access to affordable, high-quality education in a variety of programs from career and technical to liberal arts education; and

 

WHEREAS, the UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII COMMUNITY COLLEGE System is gaining national and worldwide attention with its award-winning achievements in STEM, culinary arts, and design; furthermore, high demand programs include business, education, digital media, computer networking, television production, engineering, and visual and performing arts; and

 

WHEREAS, the establishment of the UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII COMMUNITY COLLEGES was realized with the signing of Act 39, an Executive Order by Governor John A. Burns on April 23, 1964; and

 

WHEREAS, over the years, the UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII COMMUNITY COLLEGE System has grown into seven colleges, including Hawaii Community College, Honolulu Community College, Kapiolani Community College, Kauai Community College, Leeward Community College, UH Maui College, and Windward Community College; and

 

WHEREAS, the UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII COMMUNITY COLLEGES continue to meet the growing challenges of a new era with innovative studies in sustainability, energy, and agriculture, as well as technical, occupational, and professional programs that strengthen our State's economy; and

WHEREAS, the statewide system has evolved into separately accredited institutions and are a part of the larger ten-institution University of Hawaii System; additionally, there are now three university centers and six education centers serving Oahu, Hawaii, Kauai, Maui, Molokai, and Lānai; and

 

WHEREAS, the UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII COMMUNITY COLLEGES focus on academic program initiatives, which include implementation of curriculum software, improvements for First Year Experience, and strategies for development and gatekeeper education; and

 

WHEREAS, education and training offered by the UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII COMMUNITY COLLEGES include degree and certificate programs and short-term programs that prepare students for industry certification, enhance workplace skills, and provide personal or professional development; and

 

WHEREAS, the UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII COMMUNITY COLLEGES have a dynamic system, which is committed to providing additional access to disadvantaged and under-represented students, particularly Native Hawaiian students; and

 

WHEREAS, the UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII COMMUNITY COLLEGES will continue to meet the diverse and changing needs of our society and fulfill a vital function within higher education; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, that this body hereby recognizes the UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII COMMUNITY COLLEGE System for 50 years of educational excellence and for the leadership role it performs in offering educational and employment opportunities for all and extends its warmest aloha and best wishes to the system as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.
