HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
requesting the department of land and natural resources to provide hawaiian history, cultural, and language training to all its employees.
WHEREAS, the Hawaiian people have a rich and complex culture and history that is not well-understood by some residents of Hawaii, including some state officials; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaiian language is the native language of Hawaii and is an official language of the State of Hawaii under section 1-13, Hawaii Revised Statutes, but it is not spoken or understood by many state officials; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Land and Natural Resources has many responsibilities related to Hawaiian burials and historic preservation, along with responsibilities for the protection and management of Hawaii's land and natural resources; and
WHEREAS, some employees of the Department of Land and Natural Resources are not well-versed in Hawaiian history and culture, and do not speak or understand the Hawaiian language;
now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, the Senate concurring, that the Department of Land and Natural Resources is requested to develop and provide in-house training relating to Hawaiian history, culture, and language to all employees; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the Department of Land and Natural Resources is requested to emphasize the importance of Hawaiian history, culture, and language during the orientation of all new employees and the training of all new and existing administrators; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson and members of the Board of Land and Natural Resources.
