HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

in support of declaring 'A'Ā as the Hawaii state rock.

     WHEREAS, volcanoes have a deep and rich cultural significance to Native Hawaiians and current residents of the State; and

     WHEREAS, the majesty and beauty of volcanoes, both active and inactive, are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike; and

     WHEREAS, the Hawaiian islands are volcanic in origin; and

     WHEREAS, each Hawaiian island is made up of at least one primary volcano, although many islands are composites of more than one volcano; and

     WHEREAS, lava rock ('A'ā) is expelled by volcanoes during eruptions; and

     WHEREAS, ‘A‘ā is one of three basic types of lava rock and is characterized by a rough, jagged spinose, and generally clinkery surface; and

     WHEREAS, ‘A‘ā is the rarest of the three types of lava rock; now, therefore,

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, the Senate Concurring, that this body hereby declares ‘A‘ā as the state rock to honor the creation of the State and the cultural significance thereof; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources.
