A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to education.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

     SECTION 1.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $         or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2014-2015 for supporting educational programs to establish and maintain a kupuna in schools program that invites kupuna into the classrooms to teach, among other things, Hawaiian language, culture, and arts.

     The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $         or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2014-2015 for supporting Hawaiian language immersion charter schools.

     The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 3.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $         or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2014-2015 for supporting the Hawaiian language medium education program and developing and utilizing assessment strategies and instruments to assess student achievement and performance to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching strategies and methods being used in the Hawaiian language medium education program.

     The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 4.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $         or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2014-2015 for increasing the number of tuition waivers awarded to Native Hawaiian students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

     The sum appropriated shall be expended by the University of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 5.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2014.
