A BILL FOR AN ACT
relating to school gardens.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. (a) There is established a school gardens task force to be placed within the department of agriculture for administrative purposes only.
(b) The task force shall:
(1) Examine the feasibility of establishing school gardens in public schools, and especially public charter schools, to grow food for consumption as part of each school's lunch program; and
(2) Determine a process by which food grown in a school garden is inspected and certified as safe for consumption.
(c) The task force shall consist of the following members:
(1) The chairperson of the board of agriculture or the chairperson's designee;
(2) The superintendent of education or the superintendent's designee;
(3) The executive director of the state public charter school commission or the executive director's designee;
(4) The director of health or the director's designee;
(5) A representative from the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation;
(6) A representative from the Kokua Hawaii Foundation;
(7) The executive director of the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools or the executive director's designee; and
(8) Any additional members to be determined by the chairperson of the board of agriculture.
(d) No member of the task force shall be made subject to chapter 84, Hawaii Revised Statutes, solely because of that member's participation as a member of the task force.
(e) The task force shall cease to exist on June 30, 2014.
(f) The chairperson of the board of
agriculture shall submit a report of the task force's findings and
recommendations, including proposed legislation, if any, to the legislature no
later than twenty days prior to the convening of the regular session of 2014.
SECTION 2. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
