SENATE RESOLUTION
REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES TO INSCRIBE
"E PLURIBUS UNUM" ON ITS ELECTRONIC BENEFIT TRANSFER CARDS.
WHEREAS, in Hawaii, more than 187,000 residents receive federal assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP); and
WHEREAS, thirty-seven thousand Hawaii residents receive federal assistance through the Women, Infants, and Children program (WIC); and
WHEREAS, the financial assistance is carried on Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards issued to program participants; and
WHEREAS, the EBT cards are used as currency to purchase food items in local stores, as if it was cash; and
WHEREAS, the funding for the monies on the EBT cards come from the federal government; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2013, that the Department of Human Services is requested to inscribe "E Pluribus Unum" or "Liberty; In God We Trust" on its Electronic Benefit Transfer cards issued to recipients of financial assistance; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Director of Human Services.
