SENATE RESOLUTION
reCOGNIZing the week of october 6 through 13, 2013, as "hawaii fishing and seafood week".
WHEREAS, in Hawaii, the heart of the Pacific, the sea and its bounty have sustained Hawaii's residents by providing food, recreation, transportation, and spirituality; and
WHEREAS, in Hawaii, fishing is a tradition woven into local culture that has been passed down for generations; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii's residents have learned to care for and sustain the State's seafood resources through active participation, use, conservation, and management; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii's residents consume more than three times the national per capita average of seafood each year; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii's fisheries produce fresh, wholesome, and healthy seafood for Hawaii's residents and visitors; and
WHEREAS, supporting local seafood production in Hawaii is recognized as a priority to reduce dependence on imported goods and provide essential food security for our island state; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2013, that this body recognizes the week of October 6 through 13, 2013, as "Hawaii Fishing and Seafood Week"; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the people of Hawaii are encouraged to recognize the importance of seafood and fishing traditions in Hawaii during Hawaii Fishing and Seafood Week, which culminates with the Hawaii Fishing and Seafood Festival hosted by the Pacific Islands Fisheries Group at Pier 38, Honolulu Harbor, on October 13, 2013; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor and the Pacific Islands Fisheries Group.
