HOUSE RESOLUTION
CONGRATULATING THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII ON the momentous occasion of ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY.
WHEREAS, the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii is the undergraduate student government representing over 11,000 undergraduate students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa; and
WHEREAS, the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii was chartered by the Board of Regents in 1912 and has been actively serving and advocating for the students of the University of Hawaii since 1913; and
WHEREAS, the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii has since grown to manage a stock portfolio with an approximate value of $6.7 million, which arose from the 1975 sale of the Honolulu Stadium and has been managed by the students since 1980 for student-driven projects; and
WHEREAS, the duties of the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii have evolved to include scholarship and research opportunities for students, allocating funds for events and programs to independent student clubs, and discussing pertinent student issues with university administration, faculty, and staff in addition to community groups and government officials; and
WHEREAS, some notable accomplishments of the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii include the construction of the student union building in 1938, preserving the university's state funding at the State Capitol in 1977, implementing a campus-wide shuttle system in 1990, a campus housing audit and the renovation of Frear Hall in 2006, and a reduced-fare student City Bus pass in 2010; and
WHEREAS, throughout the past 100 years, the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii has provided numerous students with opportunities to be a part of the decision-making process at the University of Hawaii at Manoa; and
WHEREAS, while these opportunities have allowed students to develop and enhance their leadership, public speaking, and management skills, they have also given the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii members a better understanding of the legislative process; and
WHEREAS, the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii has served as a springboard into state leadership, exemplified in their alumni including current and past elected state officials, such as Representative Kaniela Ing, Representative Jon Riki Karamatsu, Representative Sylvia Chang Luke, Representative Scott Nishimoto, Representative K. Mark Takai, Representative Carl Takamura, Senator David Ige, and Lieutenant Governor Nelson Doi; and
WHEREAS, the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii's accomplishments over the past century have given much pride and satisfaction to the university community and to the State of Hawaii; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2013, that this body hereby congratulates the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii on the momentous occasion of its 100th Anniversary, honors its past presidents and alumni for their contributions to the student body, and extends to them its warmest aloha and sincere best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
