HOUSE RESOLUTION
recognizing and congratulating challenger center hawaii on the occasion of its 20th anniversary.
WHEREAS, CHALLENGER CENTER HAWAII is the 14th learning center in an international network of 48 learning centers that have been established in memory of the crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger by the Challenger Center for Space Science Education; and
WHEREAS, operated by the Department of Education's Leeward District, CHALLENGER CENTER HAWAII is an exciting, hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning center located on the campus of Barbers Point Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, since opening its doors in 1993, CHALLENGER CENTER HAWAII has educated and inspired more than 96,000 students to develop their critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, and fundamental life skills; and
WHEREAS, CHALLENGER CENTER HAWAII provides students with an exciting space simulation experience in which they are given the opportunity to solve real-world problems while exploring the wonders of deep space; and
WHEREAS, CHALLENGER CENTER HAWAII has motivated and educated more than 1,500 teachers in its rigorous and relevant standards-based STEM curriculum; participating teachers lead students in 6 to 8 weeks of classroom preparation, culminating in the hands-on application of knowledge and critical thinking on Mission Day; and
WHEREAS, the realistic missions – "Return to the Moon" and "Rendezvous with Comet Halley" – provide students with a unique opportunity to apply vital decision-making skills and learn the value of teamwork as they work together to accomplish their collective objectives and finish the mission successfully, and since the program's inception, CHALLENGER CENTER HAWAII has flown more than 3,500 missions for students in grades 6 through 8; and
WHEREAS, CHALLENGER CENTER HAWAII continues the legacy of Hawaii-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka and the Space Shuttle Challenger crew, and is a valuable asset to the Department of Education and the State of Hawaii; its doors must remain open to enable the center to continue its mission to inspire students to dream big and value their education; and
WHEREAS, the Friends of Challenger Center Hawaii, Inc., was created to provide community support to ensure that the CHALLENGER CENTER HAWAII remains operational for many generations to come; and
WHEREAS, on Monday, April 8, 2013, CHALLENGER CENTER HAWAII will celebrate 20 years of motivating middle school students to pursue courses and careers in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2013, that this body hereby congratulates CHALLENGER CENTER HAWAII on the momentous occasion of its 20th Anniversary, recognizes the Center for its outstanding record of educating and inspiring Hawaii's students and teachers, and extends its warmest aloha and sincere best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
